Social reach keeps shrinking. Here is why restaurants should own their audience.
Only a small share of your followers see any given post. Email and text lists put you back in control of who hears about your next big night.
You booked a great band for Friday, posted it on social media and waited. Then Friday came and the room was half full. If that sounds familiar, the problem may not be your post. It may be how few people ever saw it.
How small is organic reach now?
Socialinsider analyzed more than 870,000 brand posts on Facebook and Instagram from January 2025 through August 2026. In their data, Facebook posts reached roughly 1 to 2 percent of a page's followers on average, and Instagram reach fell about 14 percent year over year.
Put simply: if you have 5,000 followers, a typical post might be seen by fewer than 100 of them unless you pay to boost it.
Rented reach versus owned reach
Social platforms are rented space. The platform decides who sees your post, and the rules change often. An email list or a text list is different. You own it, and your message goes straight to people who already said yes to hearing from you.
That does not mean social is useless. It is still a great place to be discovered. The smart move is to use social to grow your list, then use your list to fill your calendar.
A simple playbook for restaurants and venues
- Collect sign ups everywhere. QR codes on tables, at the bar and on the stage. A sign up form on your website. A simple reason to join, like first word on big shows or a birthday treat.
- Send a weekly lineup email. Same day each week, short and easy to scan: who is playing, specials and anything new.
- Save texts for the big nights. Text is powerful because it is personal. Use it for sellout shows, last minute openings and day of reminders, not every special.
- Get permission the right way. Only text people who have clearly opted in, and always make it easy to opt out. It is good manners and it is required.
- Watch what fills seats. Track reservations, ticket sales and covers on nights you send campaigns. That tells you what to do more of.
The bottom line
Every guest who joins your list is someone you can reach again for free, no algorithm required. Build that list a little every night, and the next time you book a great band, the people who love you will actually know about it.
